‘Hawks Stumble

The Washington Commanders secured a dramatic 33-31 upset victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Northwest Stadium, snapping Seattle’s impressive 12-game winning streak. Stepping in for the injured rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, veteran backup Marcus Mariota led the Commanders with an efficient performance, completing 19 of 31 passes for 183 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Mariota found favorite target Terry McLaurin six times for 77 yards and a touchdown, helping Washington maximize their opportunities despite being outgained by nearly 200 total yards by the potent Seattle offense.

The true deciding factor of the game was Washington’s opportunistic defense, which forced three critical turnovers while committing none. Although Seattle’s Sam Darnold threw for 379 yards and four touchdowns, his costly mistakes fueled Washington’s points. The definitive play came late in the fourth quarter when backup linebacker Kain Medrano intercepted Darnold and returned it 50 yards for a pick-six, pushing Washington’s lead to 33-24. Seattle answered quickly with a touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp to make it 33-31, but clutch, late-game first-down runs by Rachaad White and Mariota allowed Washington to run out the clock and lock in their first win of the season.
