The Steelers offense was on all cylinders and their defense was ultimately solid as they dominated the 49ers, 43-18, Sunday at Heinz Field.
Ben Roethlisberger threw 3 touchdowns and DeAngelo Williams tied a Steelers franchise record by rushing for three others.
Williams scored on two short runs and Roethlisberger threw touchdown passes of 2 yards to Heath Miller and 35 yards to Darrius Heyward-Bey as the Steelers scored 4 touchdowns to mount a 29-3 halftime lead.
Roethlisberger completed 21 of 27 passes for 369 yards, no interceptions and no sacks. He had a near-perfect passer rating of 155.8. Brown caught nine passes for 195 yards.
Colin Kaepernick completed 33 of 46 yards for 335 yards and two touchdowns for the 49ers, but was sacked five times. The Steelers also held Carlos Hyde to 43 yards rushing after he ran for 168 the previous week in a victory against Minnesota.
Roethlisberger, hitting on several deep pass plays, connected with Markus Wheaton on a 48-yarder on third down to the 49ers 8 to set up that third score by Williams.
San Francisco did not score a touchdown until the 4th quarter when Kaepernick tossed a 4th-down, 14-yard touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin.
The 49ers scored again soon after the Steelers’ fifth touchdown. Kaepernick threw deep to Torrey Smith, who beat Will Allen to haul in a 75-yard TD pass. A 2-point conversion closed the gap to 36-18.
The Steelers maintained a 29-3 lead after a scoreless third quarter. Their defense bent and did not break in the third when they allowed the 49ers to drive 82 yards on 18 plays, then stuffed them at the 1.
San Francisco had six cracks from the 3 and could not put it in the end zone. Their final chance, on fourth down at the 1, went awry when Lawrence Timmons broke up a pass in the end zone.
Williams’ third touchdown staked the Steelers to a 36-10 lead, responding to San Francisco’s first touchdown of the game with another of their own.
