The Houston Texans rallied from 10 down in the third quarter to storm past the Los Angeles Chargers 27-20 Sunday afternoon at Rokit Field at Dignity Health Sports Park.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson completed 25-of-34 for 351 yards and three touchdowns, achieving a 135.8 passer rating in the process. Two of his touchdowns were thrown to tight end Jordan Akins, who collected them as part of his three catches for 73 yards.
Texans running back Carlos Hyde carried 10 times for just 19 yards, and running back Duke Johnson carried just two times for two yards. Watson scrambled seven times for 18 yards.
Los Angeles quarterback Philip Rivers completed 31 passes on 46 attempts for 318 yards and two touchdowns, all of them going to receiver Keenan Allen, who also caught 13 passes for 183 yards. Chargers running back Austin Ekeler carried nine times for 36 yards.
The game was also a coming out party for defensive end J.J. Watt, who notched 2.0 sacks as part of the Texans’ five on the afternoon. Outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus extended his streak of games with a sack to three and collected another forced fumble, his third of the season. Mercilus has 4.0 sacks, three forced fumbles, and an interception through the first three games of 2019.
The Texans (2-1) go home to face the Carolina Panthers, winners 38-20 over the Arizona Cardinals, for a Sunday match-up at NRG Stadium in Week 4.Los Angeles (1-2) goes on the road to face the Miami Dolphins, who lost 31-6 to the Dallas Cowboys, for their Week 4 tilt.
