Bears Maul Niners

The Chicago Bears upset the favored San Francisco 49ers 19-10 in week one as quarterback Justin Fields threw two second-half touchdowns to receivers Dante Pettis and Equanimeous St. Brown. The second-half comeback gave Matt Eberflus a win in his head coaching debut.

After a rough first half on offense, the Bears came out strong in the second half, beginning with a 51-yard touchdown to Pettis as Fields improvised to find Pettis wide open on the opposite side of the field.

The touchdown pass was followed by an 18-yard touchdown to St. Brown in the fourth quarter, giving the Bears a 19-10 lead. The defense played great the entire game sacking 49ers quarterback Trey Lance twice and forcing an interception by safety Eddie Jackson late to seal the game.

The 49ers out-gained the Bears, picking up more first downs and total yards. But Lance’s late interception down 10-13 set the Bears up for the touchdown to take a two-score lead.

Ultimately, the inability of Lance to throw the ball when needed cost San Francisco the game. Despite appearing in the NFC Championship game last year, the 49ers have to be worried as they were without star tight end George Kittle coming into the game and losing rising star running back Elijah Mitchell.

It has to be an excellent feeling for the Bears, who lost to San Francisco last year, and for Fields, who was drafted eight spots behind Lance.

The Bears are 1-0 and are headed to Green Bay for a prime-time matchup against the Packers in week two.
