The Denver Broncos defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 on Sunday, earning an important AFC West victory in a dramatic divisional showdown. Denver overcame a competitive Kansas City team in a game that featured several momentum swings and plenty of late-game tension. The Chiefs managed to keep the pressure on throughout the afternoon, but Denver’s ability to capitalize on key opportunities ultimately made the difference. The victory was particularly significant for the Broncos as they continued to establish themselves as a serious contender in the AFC.
Kansas City appeared to be in control entering the fourth quarter, holding a 24-13 lead behind a strong performance from Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes completed 30 of 41 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns, including an impressive 73-yard scoring connection with rookie running back Emmett Johnson. Rashee Rice also contributed a touchdown in his return from injury, while tight end Noah Gray added another score. Denver’s offense had struggled to find consistency through the first three quarters, but quarterback Bo Nix refused to let the game get away. Nix threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Nate Adkins and connected with Jaylen Waddle for a successful two-point conversion, cutting Kansas City’s lead to 24-21.
The Broncos completed their comeback with two enormous fourth-quarter plays. After Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal, Denver quickly took advantage. Rookie running back Jonah Coleman caught a short pass from Nix and turned it into a spectacular 51-yard gain, setting up his own five-yard touchdown run on the very next play. Denver took a 28-24 lead with less than two minutes remaining, leaving Mahomes one final opportunity to rescue the Chiefs. Kansas City marched down the field and reached the Denver one-yard line with just seconds remaining, but the Broncos’ defense refused to break. Defensive lineman Malcolm Roach delivered the decisive play, sacking Mahomes on fourth-and-goal to seal the victory.
The win was a statement victory for Denver, which improved to 6-2 and moved into first place in the AFC West after winning its fourth consecutive game. Nix finished with 222 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Coleman emerged as an unexpected hero with 104 total yards and the game-winning score. Despite outgaining Denver 399-294, Kansas City was unable to finish the job, with costly penalties and its inability to convert the final goal-line opportunity proving decisive. The loss dropped the Chiefs to 5-2 and marked their second consecutive defeat. For the Broncos, it was another impressive demonstration of resilience and a major boost to their divisional and playoff aspirations.
