The Atlanta Falcons pulled off one of the biggest upsets of Week 7 on Sunday, October 25, defeating the previously undefeated San Francisco 49ers 29–20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. San Francisco looked firmly in control early, building a 14–3 lead behind touchdown runs from Christian McCaffrey and rookie Kaelon Black. Atlanta responded with a Nick Folk field goal and a touchdown pass from quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to tight end Nick Muse. Folk added another field goal before halftime, cutting the 49ers’ advantage to 14–12 and giving the Falcons momentum heading into the second half.
Atlanta seized control after the break, scoring 17 unanswered points to take command of the game. Penix connected with tight end Kyle Pitts for a five-yard touchdown to give the Falcons their first lead, then found wide receiver Drake London for another touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Penix finished with 213 passing yards and three touchdown passes, spreading the ball effectively among his receivers. Folk contributed three field goals, while Atlanta’s offense avoided turnovers and capitalized on favorable field position. The Falcons’ balanced attack and timely execution turned a deficit into a 26–14 lead and put San Francisco under mounting pressure.
The 49ers attempted a late comeback, with McCaffrey scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown to narrow the gap, but San Francisco’s mistakes ultimately proved too costly. Quarterback Brock Purdy threw for 288 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice, and the 49ers committed four turnovers overall. Atlanta’s defense delivered the decisive plays, with rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels intercepting Purdy late in the game and helping set up Folk’s field goal to extend the lead. The Falcons secured a much-needed victory after consecutive losses, improving to 3–4, while the 49ers suffered their first defeat of the season and fell to 6–1.
