Let’s Try It Again

The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks will open their season at home against the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 4.
The two teams have not net since the infamous “Fail Mary” game in Week 3 of the 2012. The game ended with the Seahawks’ Golden Tate being award a touchdown after M.D. Jennings clearly had the interception secured before Tate took the ball from him after the play. The replacement referees ruled the play a simultaneous catch and Seattle won the game.
Although many of the Green Bay players have said they are still bitter about the way the game finished, head coach Mike McCarthy said the game will not be about the past.
“This game won’t be about the past,” he said. “It will be about the 2014 Green Bay Packers.”
The Packers will be traveling to face the defending Super Bowl champions for the third straight season, an opportunity McCarthy relishes.
“It’s a tremendous opportunity for our football team,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “We have experience playing in the kickoff opener three years ago, and we will draw on that. Obviously, being the visiting team this time presents new challenges. It will help sharpen our focus even more during training camp and the preseason.”
The NFL has returned the tradition of playing at the Super Bowl champion’s home stadium after the Baltimore Ravens started the season on the road in 2013. The Baltimore Orioles had a baseball game the Thursday which the season was set to kick-off and caused the season opener to be played at Denver.
While both Tate and Jennings have moved to different teams, Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers will be leading their respective teams in this battle once again. The Packers lead the series 10-6 all-time against the Seahawks. Both quarterbacks will be chasing the record of seven touchdown passes in a season opener set by Peyton Manning last season.
