Comeback In C-Town

Down 28-3 in the second quarter? That’s no problem for Brian Hoyer and the high-octane Browns offense.

That’s right … the Browns.

Cleveland pulled off the biggest comeback in franchise history to win, 29-28, in Tennessee on Sunday when Travis Benjamin hauled in a touchdown from Hoyer with about a minute left in the game to put the Brownies up for good. It was the biggest comeback for a road team in NFL history.

The score capped a big day for the Browns’ offense — 460 total yards, 285 yards through the air, 175 yards on the ground and 27 first downs in 11 drives.

Hoyer finished 21 of 37 with three touchdowns and a pick, and the Browns got back to .500 (2-2) with the win. The biggest marigin of victory in any Cleveland game this season is three — the loss to Pittsburgh in Week 1.

The Browns technically are five points in two games away from being undefeated. But, then again, they’re also three points in two games away from being winless.

“I did tell them after the game they got to stop doing it,” coach Mike Pettine said of the close calls. “I have an EKG scheduled for tomorrow because my heart can’t take many more of these.”

The Browns won a road game for the first time since Sept. 22, 2013, at Minnesota. They snapped a seven-game road skid scoring 26 unanswered points, including 16 in the fourth quarter.

The Titans (1-4) had a massive collapse — their biggest since moving to Tennessee in 1997.

The Browns had never come back from more than 20 points before, and this easily topped the comeback on Dec. 4, 1966, when Cleveland trailed the Giants, 34-14, and won, 49-40, according to STATS Inc.

“It’s just good to win,” Hoyer said. “I said when we broke it down, ‘Let’s just win one by two touchdowns one week and not give everybody a heart attack.’ It’s great to always win, but to win coming back and know that you battled your butt off is a great feeling.”
