Sweeps Weekend
- Updated: January 17, 2015
The race can be over this weekend. That’s right; it’s all on the line. If Amodeo sweeps with underdogs Green Bay and Indianapolis, he pulls the soul-crushing comeback to win his 3rd Swami title. If the favorites were to sweep this Sunday’s Conference Championships, then Guy Heath will capture his first-ever Swami title, securing the points lead into the Super Bowl. How did this all take place? With Heath’s 13-point lead going into the Divisional playoff games last weekend, Mike Amodeo gained 5 points with wins in Seattle and Indianapolis, and has both of his Super Bowl picks still viable; the Packers and the Colts. This means if the Colts were to upset the Patriots in Foxboro and the Packers can wheel out a gimpy Aaron Rodgers and defeat the Seahawks in Seattle (the more difficult task), then it would be Mike who secures the 11-point Super Bowl Champion. This would shut everyone out of the Swami Bowl and lock up a miracle win for Amodeo, who has been behind sitting at 2nd place since late November.
For Heath, the leader since Week 13, this would spell disaster for a season that seemed all but locked in for a championship. Though Heath has the upper-hand in points and has the advantage of the home favorites to win regardless of spreads, there’s a strong concern that a Tony Romo-esque cloud of fate could uphend what seemed to be a sure Swami championship. On the other hand, sweeps for either player are not necessary. A split in either direction of outcomes in Sunday’s games would land Guy and Mike to showdown in the Super Bowl, for the SFL’s 4th Swami Bowl. Mike has teams remaining in each championship, so if the AFC Champion were the Colts, he would square off against the Guy and the Seahawks. Vice Versa? Yes, He would have his Packers against Guy’s Super Bowl picked Patriots.
In any scenario for the final result, there will be unprecedented elation. For Mike to pull off what is known as “The Smitty”, a comeback of unlikely proportions to upset the leader for the title (as Ivan Soto did against Jason Smith in 2008). For Heath, a first-ever title that he’s been waiting for 8 seasons to accomplish, and to polish off a great year.
The line for Sunday has Seattle as 7.5 point favorites, and in New England, the Patriots are 7.5 point favorites over the Colts.
