It’s going to be a very different week in Nashville than it is going to be in Green Bay.
The Titans raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never let that lead drop under 13 points on their way to a 47-25 victory that leaves them with a 5-5 record. With three games left in the AFC South, it also leaves them with every reason to think they can compete for the division title this year.
If their offense can have more days like they had on Sunday, that won’t be a hard outcome to imagine. Marcus Mariota avoided last week’s turnovers while throwing four touchdowns behind an offensive line that was without left tackle Taylor Lewan after he was ejected in the first quarter of the game for making contact with an official. That didn’t hurt Mariota’s protection much and DeMarco Murray ran 17 times for 123 yards as the Titans spent most of the day protecting a huge lead.
The defense sacked Aaron Rodgers five times and Rodgers threw two interceptions, so he didn’t share Mariota’s success. Rodgers completed 31-of-51 passes for 371 yards and two touchdowns, but the Packers were down so big so quick that it felt like they were doing little other than padding their stats for the final three quarters of the game. They had to do that because the Green Bay defense got steamrolled by Tennessee’s offense.
Once you throw in a muffed punt, a missed extra point and an onside kick out of bounds from the special teams and 12 penalties for 107 yards you’ve got complete system failure for the Packers.
That’s going to make for a week that’s 180 degrees from the optimism that should be brewing around the Titans right now. It’s the second straight week that the Packers have been pasted by an AFC South opponent and the rate of downhill acceleration is picking up by the week for Mike McCarthy’s team. They’ll need to find a brake while on the road in Washington and Philadelphia the next two weeks or there’s not going to be any holiday cheer waiting for them when they return home on December 4.
