Schaub Feels the Heat

It was the pick six heard ’round the world. When Texans quarterback Matt Schaub threw a game-losing interception with just over five minutes to go in the Texans-Seahawks game a few weeks ago, fans had had enough.

First came the jersey burning, and then the infamous “Pick Six” burger, in which a Skeeter’s Grill employee created the Matt Schaub Special: Pick 6 toppings for your burger…and pay for it dearly.

Sadly, Week 5’s game against the 49ers wasn’t much better. Let’s just say it hasn’t been Matt Schaub’s best couple of weeks.

But that’s not to say he doesn’t have any local support. The owners of Little Bitty Burger Barn are hoping a special on their menu will boost his morale. In honor of the Texans QB, the restaurant offers a free quarter-pound basic burger to anyone named Matt or Matthew. The special runs all day long, so if you’ve never had Little Bitty Burger Barn’s delectable burgers (and your name is Matt), now’s the time to try them. Bring a photo ID.

After Schaub threw three interceptions in that 34-3 loss at San Francisco, he was mercifully benched in favor of Yates. The struggling Schaub threw interceptions returned for touchdowns in four consecutive games — an NFL record. Including the postseason, he has been intercepted in eight games in a row.

The Texans then fell to 2-3 with their third consecutive loss, and Kubiak insisted after the game that Schaub was still his starting quarterback. But Kubiak added that the status of all players was being evaluated.

Schaub has thrown for 1,366 yards, with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions this season. His passer rating of 76.9 places him 25th in the NFL.

“Its been rough last few weeks, and we have to get it turned around,” Kubiak said.

The announcement came hours after after Houston police said a fan came to Schaub’s house this week and took pictures before driving off. NFL security, in a story on the league’s website, said the fan also yelled obscenities, but police would not confirm that.

Schaub told reporters last week, to his knowledge, no one showed up at his house and screamed obscenities.

Then came last week’s game in Houston vs. the mediocre St. Louis Rams. Schaub went down with what appeared to be a right foot injury after Chris Long landed hard on him. And as he was laying on the ground (the score was 31-6 St. Louis when he suffered the injury), fans began cheering Schaub’s injury. They got really got excited when T.J. Yates stepped under center. Yates, somehow, someway, managed to throw an interception … that the Rams returned 96 yards for at touchdown. No, really.

The Texans have completely fallen apart somehow and there doesn’t appear to be a clear fix in sight. You can always say it’s all on the quarterback, but in this case, Houston has to look at everyone on their roster.
