Helu Victory

Roy Helu rushed for a career-best three touchdowns, including the game-winning score with 49 seconds left, to carry the Washington Redskins past the Chicago Bears, 45-41, Sunday at FedEx Field. It was one of those games where the last team that scores comes away the winner. It turned out to be the Redskins, who got that third touchdown from Helu with less than a minute to play Sunday for the ‘Skins 2nd win of the season.

Helu, a third-year running back, rushed 11 times for 41 yards and his three touchdowns eclipsed his two-score production from his first two NFL seasons. His touchdown run capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive engineered by Robert Griffin III.

Griffin completed 18 of 29 passes for 298 yards with two scores and an interception. He also ran for 84 yards on 11 carries to help the Redskins improve to 2-4.

Alfred Morris led the Redskins’ ground game with 95 yards on 19 carries, Jordan Reed caught nine passes for 134 yards and a touchdown while Aldrick Robinson tallied 75 yards and a touchdown on two receptions for Washington.

The Bears lost quarterback Jay Cutler in the second quarter due to a groin injury after he was sacked by Redskins defensive end Chris Baker. Cutler left after going 3-for-8 with an interception.

Backup Josh McCown took over, completing 14 of 20 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown while running back Matt Forte kept the Bears in the game by rushing 16 times for 91 yards and three scores.

Alshon Jeffery caught four passes for 105 yards for the Bears, who slipped to 4-3 after losing three of their last four games.

After Kai Forbath and Robbie Gould exchanged field goals, Forte put the Bears ahead, 10-3, with a two-yard touchdown run in the first period.

In the second, Helu tied the game with a 14-yard scoring run and Brian Orakpo returned an interception for a 29-yard touchdown to put the Redskins ahead, 17-10.

Devin Hester tied the game anew with an 81-yard punt return but Griffin found Reed for a three-yard touchdown pass to give the Redskins a 24-17 lead at the break.

A rushing battle between Forte and Helu highlighted the third period. Forte ran for a 50-yard touchdown to tie the game at 24-all but Helu’s three-yard scoring burst gave the Redskins a 31-24 advantage.

Forte started the fourth with a six-yard scoring run but the Redskins moved ahead behind Griffin’s 45-yard pass to Aldrick Robinson.

Gould then buried a 49-yard field goal and McCown completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett for a 41-38 Bears lead with 3:57 left.
