Eagles Rout Giants
- Updated: January 23, 2023
Five years to the day after their last home playoff victory – the NFC Championship triumph over the Minnesota Vikings – the Eagles punched their ticket to the NFC Championship Game, winning by the same exact score.
This time, however, the victims were the New York Giants, as the Eagles raced out to a 28-0 halftime lead and never turned back, beating the division rivals for the third time this season, 38-7.
The Eagles will next face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship.
Philadelphia set the tone on the opening drive of the game with an 8-play, 75-yard drive that featured tight end Dallas Goedert shoving Giants cornerback Adoree Jackson out of the way after DeVonta Smith hauled in a 40-yard reception before Goedert scored on a 16-yard touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead.
The defense dominated the Giants as the Eagles held the New York offense to just three first downs on their first six possessions.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts won his first career playoff game with a super-efficient outing, completing 16-of-24 pass attempts for 154 yards with three total touchdowns for a 112.2 passer rating. Hurts added another 34 yards on the ground.
The Eagles’ offensive line welcomed back tackle Lane Johnson to the lineup after the All-Pro was sidelined with a groin injury and smashed on the ground, amassing 416 total yards and 268 yards on the ground, paced by Kenneth Gainwell’s 112-yard outing.
From a receiving standpoint, Smith had six catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. Goedert finished with five catches for 58 yards and the score.
The defensive line feasted as well with five sacks, paced by Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat each posting 1.5.
Some of the other amazing numbers – the Eagles doubled the Giants in first downs (26-13), the Eagles were 10-of-14 on third down and 4-of-5 in the red zone.
The Giants finished with just 227 yards of offense as Daniel Jones threw for just 135 yards with an interception, while Saquon Barkley had 61 yards although 39 came on one play in the second half.
