Nice Kitty

Whether by air, by land (did you see his naked bootleg Sunday afternoon against Dallas?) or seemingly by telepathy, Peyton Manning has been unstoppable this season. This weekend the Denver Broncos meet the winless Jacksonville Jaguars, a matchup that has produced a historically wide point spread and a little Twitter spat.

The Broncos, at 5-0, have scored more points than any other team in NFL history through five games. Last Sunday, they scored 51 in a victory over the Dallas Cowboys. That’s a total that just happens to match the 51 points the 0-5 Jaguars have scored all season. It looks bad for the Jags, very bad. Still, they didn’t take kindly to the Broncos’ pointing that out.

The matchup produced a Las Vegas line that opened at 28 points — four touchdowns. ESPN, citing a sports betting publication, reports that the number ties the highest spread of all time, set by the Baltimore Colts and Atlanta Falcons in 1966 and is the largest spread since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. The spread figures to shrink as the week progresses, but as long as Manning is healthy and feels like playing Sunday, it’ll still be enormous.

There’s ample precedent for the Jaguars losing by 28; they’ve already lost 28-2 to Kansas City and 37-3 to Indianapolis. And, on Sunday, the Jags lost left tackle Luke Joeckel, the No. 2 pick in the draft, for the rest of the season to a broken ankle.
